Cabin Sole and Cushions
The cabin in our X was pretty much standard issue. The fabric on the cushions were in good condition although the foam inside was starting to deform. Still, not bad for 16 year old upholstery. The shag carpet though was difficult to keep clean and, you know, its shag...
I found this plank vinyl flooring at our local Home Depot. Its relatively thin and flexible and not too difficult to cut and shape. The instructions do say this product is not waterproof but hey, its vinyl, right? The best part is one box does the entire cabin at an affordable price, $47.76.
I used 2"X4" strips of self adhesive Velcro (one at each end) to secure the floor to the cabin sole to prevent the new floor from slipping around when stepped on. While you can feel a bump from the Velcro if you happen to step on that spot, it is not visible to the eye.
For cushions, I did not want to go back to standard specs. I purchased all new foam and fabric from Jo-Ann's Crafts when they had their spring sale at 50% off. We found a great tropical themed outdoor upholstery that both the Admiral and I could agree on. I kept the seat backs at the original 3" foam thickness but increased the seats to 4". I used the original covers as patterns except for adding the additional inch to the side pieces of the seats. I also added sleeves to cover those awful looking exposed fiberglass backs that Rodger provided for us. This had the added benefit of holding the cushions in place better than using Velcro alone can. I bagged up the old cushions and stored them in the boat house should we ever need them. The total cost of foam and fabric was about $260.00 plus a couple of weeks of free time spent on the sewing machine. That saved us at least half off the price of buying just replacement covers plus now we have our own personalized custom cabin. Now I feel the need to replace the bed cushions...
